Project 9

ATTACHING THE WHEELS AND MOTORS TO THE PLATFORM

MATERIALS

*2 servos with wheels attached

*caster wheel (from a hardware store)

*screws

*screwdriver

*pencil

*2.5 × 5 cm (1 × 2 in) board

*robot platform

*ruler

*wood glue

*C-clamp

*drill and bits

*carpenter’s square

Place the two servos with attached wheels on the underside of the platform. Place them on opposite sides so they are within half an inch of the ends of the platform. Measure the width of the platform and mark the center at the end opposite to the servos. Place the caster wheel here, within a half inch of the end. The three wheels should make an equilateral triangle. The height of the caster wheel, from the base to the bottom of the wheel, should be about the same as the distance from the top of a servo to the bottom of the attached wheel. This will make the platform level.

Using a pencil, mark the holes in the base for the caster wheel. Ask an adult to drill small holes in the platform where you marked the holes. Screw the caster wheel into the platform.

Cut two 5-cm– (2-in–) long blocks of the 2.5 × 5 cm (1 × 2 in) board. Fit one block to one of the servos so you can mark the position of the screw holes. Repeat with the other block. Ask an adult to drill starter holes in these blocks of wood so you will be able to screw on each servo. (See Figure 13.) You are ready to attach the servos to the platform.
